Pope meets the Vietnamese communist Leader

ShekianhToday 22nd January, 2013: Pope Benedict XVI is  meeting with Vietnamese political leader of the communist Party Nguyen Phu Trong.

The meeting is seen very “unusual” on many levels.

More often than not , head of the states are likely to meet Pope rather than the heads of the political parties. What is more striking that communist Vietnam does not hold any diplomatic relationship with the Holy See.

It is reported that meeting is going to take place on Tuesday, which is the official rest day for the pope.

The two leaders will discuss the start of the new relationship after a working group has been set up.

In the midst of the on-going persecution in the Vietnam where Christians are often subject to persecution, harassment and intimidation is yet another striking parallel in this meeting.
