Some 1000 residents of a slum in Islamabad near Sector G-11 had to flee the area fearing religious violence soon after the case was lodged under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code at Ramna Police Station on August 17th, 2012.
Syed Muhammed Ammad, a local Muslim, complained that he has eye witnessed the girl burning the pages of Quran along with garbage.
The incident flamed the fire of religious hatred, when angry Muslims gathered at the police station and protested for the immediate arrest of 11 year old Rimsah Masih. They also blocked Kashmir Highway and chanted slogans aganist the poor girl. Some of the protesters also managed to beat Rimash and her mother while other family members fled the sence. Police arrived at the scene and took Rimsah Masih to Adiala Jail on judicial remand.
Local Christian activtists approached the Police Station who met with hostile attitude by Police who was uncooperative and further threatened Christians . Officals at the Police Station maintained that Down Syndrome girl, Rimshah has admitted her crime”- burning the pages of Quran.
Minister in Charage of National Harmony, Dr Paul Bhatti, brother of late Shahbaz Bhatti who was murdered after years of campaigning aganist Blasphemy laws, contacted local Muslim religious leader to calm the situation in the area.
Christians in Pakistan are living under the dangling sword of Blasphemy laws every day which has claimed hundreds of lives since their inception in 1980s. These laws are abused aganist vulnerable, weak, poor christians like Rimsah who are defenceless against the tyranny of religion, injustice and inequality for minorities in Pakistan.
